National Day Holiday Sets Record for NEV Travel: Charging and Battery-Swap Infrastructure Under Stress Test
Charging Volume Surges 51%
During the 2026 National Day holiday (October 1-7), new energy vehicle (NEV) travel surged, with NEV traffic volume up 35% year-on-year. National Energy Administration data showed that on the first day of the holiday, highway charging volume reached 28.05 million kWh, up 60.4% from the same day in 2025, setting a new single-day record for holidays. Over the full seven days, highway NEV charging reached 163 million kWh across 6.71 million sessions, with daily average charging volume up 51.42% year-on-year.
Innovative Pole-Mounted Charging Piloted
State Grid Anhui Electric Power piloted an innovative pole-mounted medium-speed charging solution in Shitai County before the holiday. These chargers are installed directly on existing utility poles, reducing construction costs by over 80% compared to mainstream fast chargers. Charging speed reaches 50% of fast chargers and 5-6 times that of home slow chargers. During the holiday, the pilot sites accumulated 2,382 kWh, providing approximately 20,000 km of range. The investment payback period is only half that of fast chargers, though deployment is currently limited by transformer capacity constraints.
Battery Swap Sets Records
Battery swapping gained significant attention during the holiday. NIO set new single-day swap records twice: 183,469 swaps on October 1 and 183,664 on October 5. As of October 7, NIO had built 9,545 charging and swap stations nationwide, including 4,166 swap stations, with over 120 million cumulative swaps. CATL's chocolate swap solution had deployed 2,520 stations nationwide by September 29, with private vehicle daily swap volume up approximately 75% during the holiday period.
High-Power Charging Network Expands
Nationwide, over 11,000 new high-power charging facilities were added to highway service areas, equivalent to the total cumulative number previously. In Wuxi, a super charging station with 24 guns achieved intelligent power dispatch with a maximum single-gun output of 480 kW. In Hunan and Henan, fully liquid-cooled super charging stations reached 600 kW per gun, enabling "1 kilometer per second" charging speed. For electric heavy-duty trucks, 800 kW liquid-cooled super chargers were deployed in Zibo, Shandong, enabling a full charge in 30 minutes.
